Ugandans invited to try Housing Finance Bank’s online investment platform

Ugandans are encouraged to try investing in government securities through Housing Finance Bank’s securities portal.

The portal, which launched last month, resides on the bank’s website and allows customers to buy treasury bills and bonds anytime, anywhere.

Treasury bills and bonds, also known as government securities, are debt instruments issued by the government through the Bank of Uganda when borrowed from the public. The investor essentially lends money to the government for a period of time and expects to be paid back the principal amount plus interest earned over the investment period. There are different types of government securities, but the most common are Treasury bills and bonds.

Treasury bills are short-term financial instruments with a maximum investment period of one year. They are issued with maturities of 91 days (3 months), 182 days (6 months) and 364 days (1 year). Government bonds, on the other hand, are long-term financial instruments for an investment of more than one year and are issued with maturities of 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years and 15 years.

Treasury bills and bonds are risk-free, predictable, do not lose value and are well suited for individuals looking to save for the long term. They’re also a great way to diversify your investments and generate a steady stream of income through regular interest payments.

Housing Finance Bank’s securities portal is the first of its kind in Uganda.

The bank says this platform does away with the old way of buying Treasury bills and bonds through brokers, giving the ability to invest at will into the user’s hands, no matter where they are in the world.

To get started you will need a Central Securities Depository (CSD) account which you can now conveniently open via the HFB Securities Portal and have your account ready in just one hour. With your CSD account, you can then proceed to purchase a treasury bill or bond. Simply visit the bank’s website, go to Treasury and select the option you want; either open a CSD account or buy treasury bills or bonds, fill in your details and enter the amount you wish to invest and your purchase will be complete in just an hour.

For only 100,000 Ug.Shs you can invest in your future with the Housing Finance Bank through the portal.
