Criminals are early adopters and in some ways excellent beta testers for new technologies. They are always looking for a way to bypass the system. In all fairness, law enforcement really like it when the payment is made in bitcoin as opposed to fiat. I think it’s funny because, as a former prosecutor, I take it for granted. There is a real false sense of security when using cables or using traditional financial services. People think, “Oh, we know all about it. So let’s just make a subpoena. The bank will give us these documents and we’ll just get the money. ”It’s just so far from the reality of the situation.

So you don’t think these ransomware attacks are a function of crypto?

I think you are wondering if crypto is the cause of ransomware and it absolutely is not. I have followed many of the Justice Department’s largest online money laundering programs. In fiat systems, 99.9 percent of money laundering requests are successful. What is special about the ransomware attacks – the Colonial Pipeline is a great example of this. It is unprecedented that the Department of Justice has been able to recover the proceeds from international criminal activities so quickly. This timeline is usually years, if any.

When you think about risks in crypto, how big do you think the leverage is in the crypto system?

Just like with traditional financial services, there is of course leverage, I won’t deny that. But people can have a lot more influence with platforms abroad. So I think it is in the interests of US regulators and consumers to promote responsible innovation here in this country. So don’t say you can’t control, but let’s talk about what limits are – what are some good traffic rules that we could agree on.

One of the only things that has been unifying Congress lately is China, and I think US politicians and lawmakers are starting to realize that China and other countries are making progress and realizing that crypto and blockchain are a real priority and that we are in contrast to in. the Internet, where Darpa and the US government participated.

What do you think of memifying crypto? When you see Elon Musk tweeting about Dogecoin, are you saying it’s great or awful?

Somewhere inbetween. Right now something fundamental is happening with the internet and culture and I think crypto is the epicenter. It’s easy to dismiss things as games or memes. I was guilty of that myself a few years ago. And you know, I’ve been proven wrong a couple of times. One of the things I’ve tried to learn is to keep an open mind.

They raised $ 2 billion for this crypto fund, amid this almost euphoria over the past few months surrounding crypto and the future of crypto, NFTs, the price of bitcoin rises to over $ 60,000. A lot of air came out this week. Can you contextualize the fund and fundraising in this environment?
