NEW BUSINESS ROUNDUP: New business owners bring talent to the table | Messages

Tahlequah’s business community has grown in recent weeks, adding a craft shop, hair salon and BBQ spot.

The Craft Addict opened downtown this week, and a swarm of visitors turned out for the grand opening on Thursday. The shop offers a variety of materials for making resin art, vinyl projects, tumbler creations, paintings and more.

Owner Heather Crowell originally started a business making crafts through Etsy in 2017, but wanted to help people make items themselves.

“I’m interested in crafts and I just saw a need in the city,” she said, adding that there aren’t many stores in the area that cater to needs. “Supplies in town aren’t the best quality to make good crafts, so you end up ordering online and waiting two or three weeks for things to arrive. I’m trying to fill that need, so you can just come in, buy what you need and go.”

The store is adjacent to Tahlequah Creates, so customers can get inspiration at the local art gallery and then stop by The Craft Addict to pick up supplies. The new company has its own laser that offers custom cutting and engraving. Crowell also hopes to offer laser design classes, painting classes, and other craft-and-take-out events for people.

“This is going to be really fun,” she said. “We’re excited and ready to be a part of downtown.”

The Craft Addict is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm; and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m

Those looking to grill something up can stop by the Double Barrel BBQ, held Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lowry’s Discount Furniture & Mattress Store, with ribs and bologna available every day. He also makes coleslaw, grilled beans, and loaded potato salad from scratch.

For the Lowrey Volunteer Firefighter, cooking is a passion he never knew would develop into a business.

“I’ve always wanted to cook and enjoyed it, but I never really thought it would become a career,” he said. “We had a meeting at the fire department and they asked if anyone would like to cook for a banquet. I don’t know why my hand went up but it did and they decided they wanted to grill.”

After a successful feeding, Davis eventually acquired the smoker that the fire department once used as a child. He was able to bring it back to life and started competing in barbecue competitions. After some 70 competitions in 12 states and a couple of Grand Champion awards, he decided it was time the locals got a taste of the barbecue he cooks up on drum barrel smokers.

After just a week, Davis sold out his prized grill, so hungry customers should get there early. He said he doesn’t think he’s ever worked so hard, but he’s also never enjoyed it so much.

“It’s something I’m very passionate about, and it allows me to come home and be with my family,” he said. “I have four kids, so I come home and spend time with them. Eventually I might turn into a dinner service, but I’m a one-man crew. So we’ll see.”

Those in need of a fresh cut can head to 1213 Barber Co. near El Molcajete in Tahlequah, where Lanae Mike and Hanna Eagle opened their own shop. The duo had previously worked for another barbershop but decided to open their own branch in mid-December.

“It’s been good so far,” Mike said. “We’ve been busy and got all our regular customers back. We just wanted to be able to do our own thing.”

The duo offer men’s haircuts and grooming, including a close razor shave followed by a hot towel. Mike and Eagle plan to grow the business and then hire more barbers to cater to the community. Eagle said customers would find good haircuts in a good environment, adding that it’s best for customers to make appointments by calling 918-525-7486.

1213 Barber Co. is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Saturdays by appointment only.

In the future, the city will also have a Schlotzsky’s Restaurant. According to the company’s PR team, the company is aiming to open one this spring, although it’s common for dates to change that far in advance.
