BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – A new store opens in downtown Beckley.
Tony Martin went to an ax thrower pub to celebrate a birthday and what he thought he would enjoy just a little quickly became a passion that longed him for a similar place in Beckley.
“I actually fell in love with him,” said Tony Martin, co-owner of Ax Hole Beckley.
“I said, hey, do you want to open one? And he said yes, you mean it, âsaid April Cook, co-owner of Ax Hole Beckley.
Martin and Cook both have financial backgrounds and were quick to get the idea off the ground. They became part of the World Ax Throwing League. They were given space in the same building as Martin’s old bookkeeping department. All they needed was a name to distinguish them, and it came from an unexpected source.
“It was like my mom made up an ax hole and I was like ax hole Beckley, that’s catchy, what could be better,” said Martin.
As a family attraction, the Ax Hole has local beer and wine, as well as games and prizes.
To do its best, the Ax Hole will hold a soft opening to celebrate the Great Race. The owners hope the special event will give people a taste of ax throwing and solidify a new business in the area.
“It’s going to be thousands of people watching so we thought it would be a good opportunity to open the doors,” said Cook.
“We just wanted to drop an anchor and maybe change the downtown area a bit to bring some activity into Beckley City,” said Cook.
Martin and Cook hope they can also serve as a beacon to bring customers to the other businesses in downtown Beckley and eventually attract new businesses as well.
Ax Hole officially opens on Monday June 28th 2021. To make reservations, click here.
