Mercedes has updated one of its most popular cars for 2022 with big changes on the inside, medium changes under the hood and subtle styling updates on the outside. The 2022 C-Class starts at $44,600 in base rear-wheel-drive trim — $1,950 more than the previous version. That’s also above the $40,945 base price of its all-time rival, the 2022 Audi A4 all-wheel-drive sedan. (All prices include destination.)

What extras come with the inflated price tag? Does expensive-looking styling count? The 2022 C-Class borrows its new look from the larger, more luxurious flagship S-Class sedan, including an updated grille design with the Mercedes star front and center.

In terms of content, the cabin layout has been revised, and the C-Class now uses the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system with its tablet-like 11.9-inch center touchscreen. The latest MBUX system has several new features, including user profiles that can be activated by voice or fingerprint scanner. There’s also a large 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.

Under the hood, the changes continue. The C300 will continue to offer a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 255hp, the same as the 2021 model. However, the engine now includes an integrated 48-volt mild hybrid starter-generator, as well as a redesigned turbocharger . Torque increases from 273 to 295 pound-feet for 2022. Mercedes says the new starter-generator setup is good for an additional 20 horsepower and 148 pound-feet when needed for “short periods of time.” There’s no word yet on fuel economy estimates.

Standard safety features include automatic forward emergency braking, a blind spot warning system, a driver attention monitor and Mercedes’ Pre-Safe pre-collision system. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, active brake assist with cross and oncoming traffic detection, active parking assist with a 360-degree camera system, and enhanced video navigation.

The 2022 C-Class will be available in Premium, Exclusive and Pinnacle trims. RWD drive is standard again; AWD is available on all trims.

The prices reflect the body style of the sedan; There’s no word yet on other body shapes. The 2022 C-Class will go on sale in the spring.
